The Dow added 263 points, or 0.5%, to finish at 54,349.12. The S&P 500 slipped 0.2% from the record it set a day earlier, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.8% as SpaceX and other growth stocks came under pressure.

A record and a retreat, on the same screen, in the same session. For anyone learning to read markets, the split is a reminder that "the market" is never one thing — and that the index you watch changes the story you see.

Why the Dow held up better

The week's backdrop favored the Dow. Hope that U.S.–Iran talks could restore safer passage through the Strait of Hormuz had already pulled oil and Treasury yields lower earlier in the week, easing some inflation and interest-rate pressure. Corporate earnings also supported industrial, healthcare, financial, and consumer shares.

The Dow has more exposure to those mature businesses than the technology-heavy Nasdaq. Meanwhile, investors took profits in growth stocks after a four-day rally, and SpaceX fell after reporting a large increase in AI spending.

That does not mean one index is "right" and the other is "wrong." It means different groups of companies were being repriced for different reasons.

The fine print on a Dow record

The Dow is price-weighted, a legacy of its nineteenth-century design. A company with a higher share price moves the index more than a company with a lower share price, regardless of which business has the larger total market value.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite are market-cap weighted, so the largest companies exert more influence. That makes Dow records useful sentiment landmarks, but not complete measures of the U.S. stock market.

Records are also common during sustained advances. A new high does not automatically mean stocks are too expensive, and it does not guarantee that prices will keep rising. The more useful question is whether participation is broadening or narrowing beneath the headline.

Why this matters to YOU

Know what your benchmark measures. "The market hit a record" and "my portfolio hit a record" can be very different statements, especially if your holdings resemble the Nasdaq while the record belongs to the Dow.

Divergence is information. When indexes split, the gap can reveal what investors are repricing — in this case, the relative appeal of mature cash-generating businesses versus growth companies facing renewed scrutiny over spending.

Records are mile markers, not instructions. The useful questions sit underneath the headline: what drove the move, how broad was it, and is the driver durable?

자주 묻는 질문

What happened to the major U.S. indexes on August 5, 2026?

The Dow rose 0.5% to a record 54,349.12, while the S&P 500 fell 0.2% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.8%.

Why can the Dow rise when the Nasdaq falls?

The indexes hold different companies and use different weighting systems. Sector rotation can lift the Dow's industrial, healthcare, and financial names while technology-heavy benchmarks weaken.

Is a record high a signal to buy or sell?

A record is a milestone, not a standalone trading signal. Investors still need to examine valuation, market breadth, earnings, interest rates, and the durability of the drivers behind the move.
