How to Interpret Net Debt Ratios
The raw net debt number is often less useful than a ratio that scales debt to the company’s size, earnings, or capital base.
A $2 billion net debt balance may be manageable for a large, stable company with recurring cash flow. A $200 million net debt balance may be risky for a smaller company with volatile revenue and weak margins. Ratios provide context.
